I am a new student at Bronx Community College, and I would like to express to you some of feelings about my experience in the college. When I first visited the campus, before I even enrolled for the fall semester I was surprised to see such a huge campus with wide open spaces. Everything in New York seems to be packed in and crowed together. Its easy to feel claustrophobic on the streets of New York with so much happening around you. Thankfully I get to spend most of my time now at BCC. Sometimes it feels like I am on a private island away from the noisy over crowed city. Besides the beautiful campus, I have had the pleasure of taking classes with wonderful and talented professors. Being an educator is the most underrated profession in our county. I am thankful to all of my professors for doing the work they do.
One situation that made me feel good about being a community college student is that BCC not only accepted me to join their family, but they have also excepted my child. Being a parent is the hardest job I have ever had to do, so when I decided to go back to school I knew that my life would be even harder now that I had to juggle being a mother and a full time student. Every parent knows the fear of leaving your child with someone else. Finding the best childcare for my daughter was my number one priority, once I decided to go back to school. After spending months looking a good daycare that was also within my limited budget, I noticed on the BCC website a page about the child center on campus. The BCC child center was the answer to my prayers. I couldn’t ask for more in a daycare, I feel confidant knowing that my child is learning, happy and safe when I am in class. Having this enormous weight off my shoulders allows me to focus on my school work in order to get good grades and graduate on time.
The only time I have ever feel bad about being a community college student is when people belittle the fact that I am in a community college and not in an ivy league school. Some people think that because I go to BCC the work is easier, but that is not the case. My classes at BCC have challenged me in ways I have never dreamed of. I feel like I am on the right track towards a bright future, and I know that what I learn from BCC will help me with what ever life throws my way.
